ACORN

Finally Spring has sprung. During Muddy Monday and Forest Friday we have been looking for signs of Spring and taking photographs to capture the changes that we can see.

We have painted pictures of daffodils – Mrs Buttery’s favourite spring flowers. We learnt to use watercolours and used ready mix paints too.

We used our measuring sticks to compare the heights of the daffodils in the school grounds.

The children were really excited when they came back to school as we had a delivery of new crates…..

And also storage for our waterproofs, so we have been practising getting ready for Muddy Monday and Forest Friday.

Then it was Easter. We have learnt how people celebrate Easter and why. Then we had our traditional activities…. Making Easter Bonnets and going on an egg hunt after we had read ‘Oh Dear’, a story about a little boy who couldn’t find the eggs for breakfast.

The children used their subitising skills and practised using the tools in their tool box to find out how many eggs were in pictures from the story ‘Eggs’ .

WILLOW

Spring Term 2021

For the first half of the Spring Term, we have been learning about Structures. We have learned:

  • to construct a variety of playground equipment
  • to use plans we have made to build our own playground equipment
  • to evaluate our plans and finished pieces

We have also learnt about animals including humans. We have learnt:

  • to sort animals into 5 categories
  • to identify and sort animals according to their diets
  • to label the human body and identify how we use our 5 senses

In PSHE we have been looking at our dreams and goals and the steps we need to take to achieve them.  In maths we have learnt about division, compared numbers and used different strategies to add and subtract. We also celebrated a faith day as a whole school, looking at the main beliefs in Christianity.

Due to the national lockdown, some of us have been working remotely from home, and some of us have been working in school. This has not stopped us achieving great things!!

For the second half of term, we will be looking at changes within living memory, focussing on music, transport and toys.

Summer Term 2021

In the second half of the Spring Term, we learnt about changes within living memory, we learnt about how music has changed from when our Great Grandparent and Grandparents were young to now. We learnt about the Queen and her family and began to develop our understanding of chronology by placing important dates in the queens life on a timeline.

In IT we learnt that an algorithm is a series of instructions, we programmed each other to move in different ways and then did the same with the Bee Bots. We designed our own tracks and had to programme the Bee Bots to go round them, it was great fun but harder than it looked!!

In PSHE we learnt about keeping ourselves healthy. Not only by the healthy food choices we make but by keeping ourselves fit and clean as well. We have enjoyed being back at school and taking part in the daily mile again.

MAPLE

For the first half of the Spring Term, we have been learning about ancient Greeks. We have learned:

  • to use sources of evidence to ask and answer questions about life in Ancient Greece
  • to use a timeline to sequence events
  • to describe Ancient Greek society and what is was like to live then
  • how Ancient Greek life has impacted on modern day

We have read lots of ancient Greek myths, and even had a go at writing one of our own. We have used ancient Greek vases as inspiration to develop our drawing skills in art, while in PSHE we have been looking at overcoming challenges to achieve our dreams and goals.  In maths we have focussed mainly on multiplication and division, improving our times table knowledge and developing efficient written methods. We also celebrated a faith day as a whole school, looking at the main beliefs in Christianity.

Due to the national lockdown, some of us have been working remotely from home, and some of us have been working in school. This has not stopped us achieving great things!!

For the second half of term, we will be looking at food, how it grows, where it comes from around the world, and following recipes to cook healthy meals. This knowledge organiser explains in more detail what we hope the outcomes will be:

Summer Term 2021

When we returned to school after the lockdown, we took part in the whole school project ’Another Place, Another Time’, where we studied Brazil and the Amazon rainforest.

For the second half of the Spring term, we learnt about how plants grow and where our food came from.

We investigated what seeds needed to germinate, by carrying out investigations with cress seeds. We discovered that seeds germinated more quickly in the dark – which really surprised us as we know plants needs sunlight to grow well.

In our Design Technology lessons, we learned to follow a recipe. We began by mixing icing sugar to different consistencies and experimented with how to decorate. We then followed a receipt to make and decorate our own Easter biscuits.

OAK

OAK
For the second half of the Spring Term, Oak class have been learning about UK mapping and developing their geographical skills. We have learned:
• How to use an index to find a place name.
• To find the correct page in an atlas by using the index.
• To explain why maps have symbols on them.
• To recognise some map symbols on an Ordnance Survey map.

We have been working hard at writing character descriptions, story settings and also hot seating based on our class novel Holes.
In Science we have been working hard and learning about the similarities and differences between humans and animals!
PSHE has been another main area of learning based on the topic Healthy Me. Children have learnt about things they can do to keep their minds and bodies healthy and they have also learnt about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
In maths we have been learning about how to divide, multiply and subtract fractions. Children have also been learning decimal and fraction conversions, which has been extremely challenging.
One of the most exciting times we had was Geography week, where we learnt about Canada and its landscapes. Children made some traditional Canadian butter tarts and also completed some wonderful art work based on Canadian scenery.
